Baptist Health Built an Entire Medical Ecosystem in West Kendall. When That System Fails a Patient, the Question Is Not Whether Something Went Wrong. It Is Where in the Chain It Started.
Most families in The Hammocks, Country Walk, and Kendall West do not realize that nearly every medical facility they use belongs to a single corporation. The hospital where they deliver their children, the freestanding ER where they take a child with a high fever at midnight, the imaging center where they get their annual mammogram, the surgical tower where they undergo a knee replacement, and the cancer institute where they receive chemotherapy are all operated by Baptist Health South Florida. That is not inherently a problem. It becomes a problem when an error at one facility cascades into a worse outcome at another, and the patient never realizes the entire chain of failure traces back to one institutional defendant.
⚠ Is Your Deadline Approaching?
Florida law gives you two years from the date you discovered your injury to file a medical malpractice claim, but the mandatory 90 day presuit investigation must be completed first.

What Happens When a Spine Surgery in West Kendall Goes Wrong
The Cancer Institute, the Freestanding ER, and the Delivery Room
15955 SW 96TH STREET: THE RATINGS THE HOSPITAL DOES NOT PUT ON ITS WEBSITE
Walk into Baptist Health Primary Care on the second floor of the Baptist Medical Arts Building and you will see a 4.8 star practice with over 1,000 patient reviews. The doctors there are well regarded. They will run your bloodwork, manage your medications, and refer you to a specialist when something comes back abnormal. The question is where that referral goes.
Down the hall in Suite 102, Baptist Health Surgery carries a 2.3 star rating. One floor up in Suite 401, Baptist Health Orthopedics carries a 3.5. In Suite 301, Baptist Health Cardiology has a single review and a 1.0 star rating. Baptist Health Endocrinology in Suite 200 sits at 2.5 stars. These are not independent clinics. They are Baptist Health branded specialty practices physically attached to West Kendall Baptist Hospital, receiving referrals from the primary care practice in the same building. A patient does not choose them. The system routes them there. And when a 4.8 star primary care physician sends you to a 2.3 star surgeon and the outcome is catastrophic, the institution that built the referral pipeline bears responsibility for every link in that chain.
On the first floor, Baptist Health Diagnostic Imaging in Suite 101 processes over 6,500 patient reviews worth of MRI, CT, and mammography studies. Baptist Health Heart and Vascular Diagnostic Imaging in Suite 400 handles cardiac and vascular studies. At this volume, the math is straightforward: even a small percentage of misinterpreted studies translates into families who received good news when they should have received an urgent call. A mass that was visible on the film but not flagged in the report. A coronary abnormality that was present on the cardiac study but not escalated to the cardiologist. The imaging report is a signed document. The physician who signed it and the system that processed it are accountable for what it says and what it fails to say.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN A SPINE SURGERY IN WEST KENDALL GOES WRONG
The patient walked into the office on North Kendall Drive complaining of lower back pain. An MRI showed a herniated disc. The neurosurgeon recommended a decompression procedure. The patient consented. They were told recovery would take six weeks. They woke up unable to move their legs.
That is the kind of case that arrives at our office. West Kendall has one of the densest concentrations of neurosurgical practices in Miami-Dade County. Baptist Health Miami Neuroscience Institute at 8950 North Kendall Drive carries a 2.8 star rating. HCA Florida Neurosurgical Specialists operates at 9100 SW 87th Avenue. Multiple solo neurosurgeons practice along the North Kendall Drive corridor. The volume of spine surgeries performed in this area produces a statistical certainty that some percentage will result in nerve root damage, improperly placed hardware, epidural hematoma, or spinal fluid leak that goes unrecognized in the post operative hours.
These are not cases measured in months of recovery. They are measured in decades of living with an injury. We retain Life Care Planners who project the cost of a wheelchair, a modified vehicle, home renovations for accessibility, 24 hour attendant care, and inflation adjusted medical expenses across a 30 or 40 year life expectancy. That projection is the foundation of the demand. Without it, the defense will argue the patient is “improving” and offer a number that covers two years of physical therapy. With it, a jury sees the real cost of what was taken.
THE CANCER INSTITUTE, THE FREESTANDING ER, AND THE DELIVERY ROOM
Miami Cancer Institute: When a Premier Facility Misses What Matters
Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute at 8900 North Kendall Drive has over 3,200 patient reviews and a reputation as one of Florida’s premier oncology centers. In our experience, defense counsel representing Baptist Health will lean heavily on that reputation to argue that their protocols are beyond reproach. But a protocol on paper means nothing if the oncologist who ordered the biopsy did not follow up on the pathology results for three weeks, or if the radiation oncologist treated the wrong field because the treatment plan was not verified against the most recent imaging. The difference between catching a cancer at Stage I and finding it at Stage III is not a scheduling inconvenience. It is the difference between a five year survival rate above 90% and one below 40%. In lost chance of survival cases, we retain oncology experts who quantify that difference in terms a jury can act on.
Country Walk ER: Open 24 Hours. Cannot Admit You.
If you live in Country Walk and your child spikes a 104 degree fever at 2 AM, you will likely drive to Baptist Health Emergency Care at 14150 SW 136th Street. It looks like a hospital. It is staffed like a hospital. It has over 5,500 patient reviews. But it is not a hospital. It is a freestanding emergency room. There is no operating room behind those doors. There is no ICU. There is no labor and delivery unit. If your child’s fever turns out to be bacterial meningitis, the facility must call an ambulance and transfer to West Kendall Baptist or another hospital. The minutes that pass between the decision to transfer and the patient arriving at a facility that can actually treat the condition are the minutes we investigate. Baptist Health’s risk management team will characterize that interval as “appropriate stabilization.” We examine the medical record to determine whether it was a delay that cost the patient their best chance at recovery.
The Delivery Room at West Kendall Baptist
West Kendall OBGYN operates two locations with a combined 2,000 patient reviews, managing pregnancies and delivering at West Kendall Baptist Hospital. In birth injury cases, the conversation the hospital wants to have is about “unavoidable complications.” The conversation we force is about timing. The fetal monitoring strips are timestamped. They show exactly when the heart rate pattern changed, how long the clinical team observed it before acting, and whether the 30 minute decision to incision benchmark for an emergency cesarean was met or missed. When those minutes were lost and the child suffered oxygen deprivation, the injury is not a complication. It is a consequence of inaction. The statute of limitations for birth injuries runs until the child’s eighth birthday, but the monitoring records will not wait that long. Hospitals are not required to preserve them indefinitely.
Jackson South: The One Exception
Jackson South Medical Center at 9333 SW 152nd Street is the only government facility serving the West Kendall area. Under § 768.28, the current cap is $200,000 per claimant and $300,000 per incident. HB 145 (2026), awaiting the Governor’s signature with an October 1, 2026 effective date, would raise these to $350,000 and $500,000. Every other facility in West Kendall is private, and the full value of those claims goes to a jury with no legislative restriction.
The Advantage of Having Built the Other Side’s Playbook
Attorney Jorge L. Flores previously worked as an attorney for a leading insurance defense firm in Miami, where he defended hospitals and their insurers against exactly these claims. He sat in the rooms where Baptist Health’s risk management team decided how to characterize a delayed transfer as “appropriate clinical judgment.” He reviewed the electronic audit trails that hospitals hoped no one would request. He drafted the motions designed to exclude Life Care Plans from evidence. He knows the architecture of the defense because he helped build it. That knowledge is now the foundation of every case we prepare against a West Kendall facility.
One System. Multiple Points of Failure. We Find Where the Chain Broke.
The hospital, the surgical tower, the freestanding ER, the cancer institute, and the imaging centers all carry the Baptist Health name. When any link fails, the institution is accountable.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Why do the specialist ratings at 15955 SW 96th Street matter?+
Ratings alone do not prove negligence. But when Baptist Health operates a primary care practice rated 4.8 stars and routes those patients to a surgery practice rated 2.3 stars in the same building, the question becomes whether the institution’s internal quality and credentialing systems are functioning as they should. That question is part of our investigation.
Is the Country Walk ER a real hospital?+
No. Baptist Health Emergency Care at Country Walk is a freestanding emergency room. It cannot admit patients, perform surgery, or provide intensive care. Patients requiring hospitalization must be transferred by ambulance to West Kendall Baptist or another hospital. The delay between the transfer decision and the patient’s arrival at a full service facility is the window we examine.
How are catastrophic spine surgery cases valued?+
A patient who loses the use of their legs after a negligent spine surgery faces a lifetime of costs that most people cannot imagine. We retain Life Care Planners and Vocational Economists who project wheelchair equipment, accessible housing, 24 hour attendant care, lost earning capacity, and medical expenses adjusted for inflation over the patient’s remaining life expectancy. That projection becomes the evidentiary foundation of the demand.
Is Jackson South the only government hospital in this area?+
Yes. Jackson South Medical Center at 9333 SW 152nd Street is the sole public entity serving the West Kendall corridor. The current cap under § 768.28 is $200,000 per claimant and $300,000 per incident. HB 145 (2026), with an October 1, 2026 effective date, would raise these to $350,000 and $500,000 once signed. Baptist Health, HCA, and every independent specialist in West Kendall are private, and a jury determines the full value of those claims.
What if Baptist Health’s Cancer Institute missed my diagnosis?+
Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute at 8900 North Kendall Drive is a private institution. If a delayed diagnosis allowed your cancer to progress, the claim is built around the difference in your survival probability between when the cancer should have been identified and when it actually was. We retain oncology experts who translate that difference into a calculation a jury can act on.
What does it cost to hire you for a West Kendall case?+
Nothing upfront. We work on a contingency fee basis and advance every cost of the investigation, the medical records, and the experts. If we do not recover compensation, you owe us nothing.
